Otaku United Begins!
Monday, Aug. 15, 2011
Hello, and welcome to the Otaku United blog! Here I will discuss everything anime, manga, video games, movies, and all that goes on in between. ( like what type of food I like to eat, if that helps). I hope this is a destination that will give you a constructive look at the current entertainment industry and the artistic industry that helps shape it. Of course there will be stuff here that doesn't fit into any category at all, because what true otaku doesn't go off topic every few minutes (oohh...shiny.)
So, to begin, why do we call ourselves Otaku United? What is an otaku?
According to Wikipedia, an "Otaku" is a Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests, particularly anime, manga, or video games."
Of course there are other takes on it: in Japan if someone is called an otaku its pretty much equivalent to being called a geek. (It doesn't sound nearly as cool that way, does it?). It would be wise not to call someone in Japan an otaku, or call yourself one, if you don't want to be looked at funny. It tends to lean more towards a negative meaning in Japan, while here in the great ol USA it has become a generic term for a fan or Japanese anime and culture.
Next is the word "united". Here is dictionary.com's take on it:
That seems pretty simple.
So what is Otaku United? It is a group of people with similar interests that support and stand by each other. Its a community that encourages sharing and creativity. It is a place to gather and have fun. Its not about always agreeing, its about standing up for what counts and what is right.
Sounds pretty good, right?
1. made into or caused to act as a single entity: a united front.
2. formed or produced by the uniting of things or persons: a united effort.
3. agreed; in harmony.
